It’s common to miss the youthful contours and smooth, wrinkle-free facial skin we once had. However, sagging skin, creases, and hollowed cheeks are hard to avoid, and at some point, many individuals consider their options to restore a younger-looking appearance.

While there are non-surgical options, like facial fillers and skin resurfacing, nothing can help correct lines, wrinkles, loose skin, and volume loss the way a facelift can.

Facelift surgery, also known as rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic procedure designed to rejuvenate the face and neck by addressing these common signs of aging to turn back the clock for a more youthful and refreshed appearance.

What Can a Facelift Achieve?

Over time, our facial skin and underlying tissue can begin to sag. Neck muscles also begin to weaken, causing even more of a downward shift and a loss of volume, causing facial contours to change. Though facelift surgery cannot stop the natural aging process, it can restore youthful contours to make you look much younger.

Wrinkles, sagging skin, and jowls that develop around the face and neck can cause you to look older than you feel. Facelift surgery can address these problems by tightening the muscles and skin in these areas to create a smoother, firmer facial appearance.

Many who struggle with common signs of aging, like wrinkles, fine lines, loose skin, and volume loss, feel self-conscious about their appearance. If you are experiencing this kind of insecurity, facelift surgery can improve confidence and self-esteem, allowing you to feel more secure about your appearance.

Benefits of Mohs Surgery

Your Facelift Procedure

Consultation

The journey to a rejuvenated facial appearance begins with a consultation with our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Vincent Hung. During this consultation, Dr. Hung will ask about your aesthetic concerns and expectations. He will also review your medical history and examine your facial structure to determine the condition of your skin. This will allow him to develop the best approach for your needs.

Preparation

Before the procedure, Dr. Hung will provide you with pre-operative instructions, which may include:

  • Avoiding certain medications or supplements that could increase the risk of bleeding.
  • Refraining from smoking, as nicotine can impair healing and increase your risk of complications.
  • Completing preoperative testing, such as blood tests and an EKG.
  • Arranging for a responsible adult to drive you home after surgery and assist you during the first 24 to 48 hours

Procedure

An incision is made within the hairline near the temple that extends behind the ear and ends in the lower scalp. Drooping underlying structures, including muscle and connective tissue, are re-contoured, and the skin is smoothed and tightened to create a more youthful appearance. Additional incisions may be made under the chin or behind the ears for the neck lift portion of the surgery. Dr. Hung will close all incisions with layered sutures.

Facelift surgery is performed under general anesthesia.

Combination

A neck lift is typically included in facelift surgery, but other procedures can be added for a more comprehensive rejuvenation, such as eyelid surgery. Dr. Hung may also recommend combining your facelift with brow lift surgery to treat deep creases or frown lines along the upper portion of your face.

If you have long-standing concerns about facial features, like your nose or ears, Dr. Hung can determine if otoplasty (cosmetic ear surgery) or rhinoplasty can be added to your facelift procedure.

Recovery

Following your facelift, you will experience temporary bruising and swelling that should resolve after a few weeks. Avoiding sun exposure for several months is essential to facilitate healing and minimize scarring. Be sure to avoid strenuous activities for at least two weeks.

Typically, patients can return to work two weeks after the surgery unless instructed otherwise by Dr. Hung.

Follow all post-operative care instructions provided upon discharge and attend all follow-up visits for an optimal outcome.

Results

You will see noticeable changes as soon as swelling and bruising subside, but your final results will not become apparent for a few months after your facelift. You can expect long-lasting results that can last 10 years or more.

By practicing a vigilant skincare routine with high-quality skincare products, you can help extend your facelift results.

Scars

Scarring will vary based on the techniques used during your procedure but are typically well hidden. Any visible scarring will likely fade over time with proper care and limited sun exposure.

Pain

Because your facelift is performed under general anesthesia, you should not experience any pain during and immediately after surgery. Dr. Hung will prescribe medication to help minimize any pain or discomfort while you recover.
