How Long Do Breast Lift Results Last?

Want Perky Breasts? Try a Breast Lift

Perky, well-shaped breasts are something of a feminine ideal: your clothes fit better, you feel more confident in bathing suits and in intimate moments, and you feel a little more youthful and vibrant. But gravity, weight fluctuations, and pregnancy can all take their toll on the breasts, causing unwanted changes to their shape and volume.

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is the cosmetic procedure that treats common issues with sagging breasts: loose skin, hanging breast tissue, downward-pointing or stretched nipples. This procedure works wonders to lift the breast tissue higher on the chest wall, and can even include nipple repositioning. But nothing lasts forever, and gravity will continue to take its toll. So, how long does a breast lift really last?

How to Make Your Breast Lift Last Longer

No plastic or cosmetic procedure can stop the natural aging process, nor can they stop natural changes to the body after pregnancy or weight loss. However, a breast lift can last 10 years or more, depending on a few factors.

What Causes the Breasts to Sag?

As we age, the skin and tissues begin to lose elasticity and collagen, contributing to ptosis, or sagging of the skin. This can be compounded by long-term weight, i.e., heavy breasts are likely to sag or stretch the skin faster than lighter ones.

Other factors include physical weight fluctuations due to pregnancy or weight loss. During pregnancy, the breasts swell, causing the skin to stretch. After breastfeeding, however, this volume is depleted, often resulting in a sagging or deflated appearance. Similarly, losing a significant amount of fat quickly can also reduce the size of the breasts, leaving them less shapely than before. Naturally, you’ll want to avoid these changes after your breast lift; otherwise, a secondary procedure may be necessary.

Timing Your Breast Lift

Sometimes with cosmetic surgery, it’s important to schedule your procedure for optimum effect, especially with procedures that combat the aging process, like a breast lift. If you have it done too early, it might be reversed by lifestyle factors or the natural aging process.

To ensure you get the most out of your breast lift, we recommend the following:

  • Wait until you are confident you are done having children. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and hormone fluctuations all can easily counteract your breast lift results.
  • Try to maintain a stable weight after your procedure. Losing weight rapidly causes the skin to stretch and may result in more ptosis.
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Eating well, avoiding alcohol and nicotine, and protecting your skin from excess sun damage can all help preserve the skin’s elasticity, which is crucial for maintaining your breast lift results for as long as possible.

Will I Need Another Breast Lift in the Future?

This depends on a number of factors, but most patients who take care of their breasts and listen to all recovery instructions do not need a secondary procedure. Again, it does depend on when you have your breast lift. For example, if you are finished having children by 30 years old and have a breast lift, your breasts will eventually begin to age again, and you may see some ptosis around age 50, but it’s up to you if you want to undergo another procedure.

When Will I See My Complete Breast Lift Results?

Immediately after your breast lift, you’ll notice a change. Your breasts may feel a little lighter, tighter, and certainly higher up on the chest. You’ll have a compression garment on most of the time throughout recovery, but when you take it off, you’ll be able to see early changes.

The primary culprit that hides the final results is swelling. This procedure removes excess fat if necessary, lifts and reshapes the actual breast tissue, and removes excess skin. It’s not a simple procedure by any means, so your body has some healing to do! Most patients can see the final results of their breasts once swelling begins to subside, usually between four and six weeks post-operative.

However, your final results will take a bit longer, as you’ll have scars to take care of. Depending on the location of your incisions (which relates to the level of revision necessary, i.e., the amount of sagging), your scars may be more visible in the early days. Once your incisions heal, you can begin scar treatment with ointments or silicone sheets to help flatten and lighten the scars.

After about one month, you’ll see the final shape and position of the breasts, as they’ll be higher on the chest, with more perky, front-facing nipples. And once your scars heal and lighten, about six months later, you’ll see the full results.

Does Eyelid Surgery Leave Visible Scarring?

Mature woman touching her cheek

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a plastic surgery procedure that treats the eyes for excess skin and wrinkles, loose pockets of fat that cause puffy undereyes, and drooping lids. This impactful procedure requires very small, discreet incisions, resulting in fine, inconspicuous scars. This blog will discuss what readers can expect from the procedure and recovery, as well as how to minimize undue scarring.

5 Min Read:

What Can Eyelid Surgery Do?

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a customized cosmetic procedure that rejuvenates the eyes by addressing the upper and/or lower eyelids. Patients may require treatment of the upper lids, lower lids, or both, as they exhibit aging in slightly different ways:

  • Upper blepharoplasty primarily treats loose, crepey skin of the upper lid, including crow’s feet. It can also be used to restore drooping eyelids, improving the patient’s field of vision and the overall aesthetic of the upper lids.
  • Lower blepharoplasty also treats loose skin and wrinkles, in addition to puffy bags underneath the eyes. Often mistaken for a symptom of fatigue or lack of sleep, undereye bags may be the result of loose muscles that cause fat displacement, ie, those pesky undereye bags.

After blepharoplasty, you will appear more rested, with smoother skin for a youthful appearance that brightens the face. This procedure is very straightforward, only taking around an hour to perform, with a short recovery time, but yields a stunning and impactful result.

How Does Eyelid Surgery Work?

Anytime an incision is made on the body, there is a possibility of scarring. Therefore, if you want to learn what you can expect from your plastic surgery procedure in terms of scarring, it’s best to understand the procedure steps and where those incisions will be.

Upper Eyelid Surgery Procedure Steps

During the upper blepharoplasty procedure, your surgeon will make an incision along or above where the eyelid creases as it opens and closes. Through the incision, your surgeon will remove or reposition fat deposits and remove excess skin. If necessary, lax muscles can be tightened to correct eyelid drooping.

Lower Eyelid Surgery Procedure Steps

The incision for lower blepharoplasty rests just below the lashline, making it easily disguised by makeup if necessary. Through the incision, the surgeon will remove or adjust fat deposits and loose skin, depending on the patient’s requested results.

What Do Blepharoplasty Scars Look Like?

Despite them being in a very visible location on the body, eyelid surgery scars tend to be very light in color and very thin—nearly imperceptible with proper healing. Upper blepharoplasty scars are easily hidden within the crease of the eyes, so when the patient’s eyes are open, they are impossible to see. Similarly, lower blepharoplasty scars are just beneath the lash line, making it very difficult to see.

Of course, everyone heals differently, and you do have to care for your incisions to ensure an ideal result. Some patients who are more susceptible to scarring or are more likely to have keloid scars may require more care to ensure a discreet result. Your surgeon can advise you on possible outcomes based on your personal medical history.

How to Help the Healing Process for Eyelid Surgery

As with any cosmetic procedure, the recovery process is key in determining the appearance of scars. The better you care for your eyes in recovery, the better you’ll heal. Luckily, blepharoplasty has a relatively quick and easy recovery process, which goes as follows:

Immediately after your procedure, you will experience some swelling, bruising, and irritation around the incisions and eyes. Over-the-counter pain medications, cold compresses, and soothing ointments may be used to help the early stages of recovery go a little smoother. However, most patients achieve functional recovery (meaning they can go back to work and resume normal activities) after about a week. Aesthetically, the eyes will start to look normal after only 10 to 14 days. Full recovery may take up to six months.

Blepharoplasty Recovery Tips

  • The best thing you can do for your eyes as you recover from blepharoplasty is to rest. Rest allows your body to do one thing: focus on healing. It’ll be easy, as you should also avoid straining your eyes for at least a week. Most surgeons suggest avoiding reading or watching TV for an extended period of time…which is ok, as you’ll likely need to sleep.
  • Keeping your eyes moist is also key, as they can easily dry out after surgery. Your surgeon can recommend a good saline solution and ointment to keep everything healthy and clean.
  • Keep your head elevated immediately after surgery and sleep with extra pillows for a few days.
  • Do not wear contact lenses or eye makeup for at least two weeks after surgery. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions concerning when you can use other cosmetics or face lotions.
  • After surgery, and for the next six months to a year, wear sunglasses whenever you go outside to avoid straining your eyes and protect them from excessive sun exposure. Once your incisions have healed and you are cleared by your surgeon, you should also use a strong SPF around your eyes. Sun exposure is one of the most common reasons patients develop darker scars, so try to avoid it as much as possible.

Can Eyelid Surgery Help Improve My Vision?

Female face closeup

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is generally considered a cosmetic procedure: people choose it to improve the appearance of wrinkled and aging eyes. But it can also improve the patient’s vision if they meet certain prerequisites. This blog discusses how upper blepharoplasty can improve vision, the steps of the procedure, and whether it is covered by insurance.

5 Min Read:

How Blepharoplasty Can Improve Your Vision

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that treats the upper or lower eyelids for sagging skin, puffiness, wrinkles, and drooping eyelids. This customized procedure is tailored to the patient’s unique needs and goals, with plastic surgeons offering treatment to the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both.

Blepharoplasty is considered an elective cosmetic procedure, meaning it is not medically necessary and is primarily used to enhance the appearance of a patient’s eyes. However, there may be some functional benefits to this procedure. In some cases of severe upper eyelid drooping, where the skin of the eyelid falls into the patient’s line of sight, an upper blepharoplasty can address this concern, offering both aesthetic and functional benefits, as it improves the patient’s field of vision.

The Upper Blepharoplasty Procedure

The eyes represent a significant part of our identity, as they convey our emotions and other nonverbal forms of communication to others. Thus, eyelid surgery is one of the most popular facial cosmetic procedures, as many patients are interested in maintaining their youth and aesthetics. Eyelid skin is very delicate and can show signs of aging quickly. As the skin and tissues lose elasticity with age, repetitive motion (rubbing), and external factors such as genetics or sun damage, the eyes can begin to look aged and worn.

Upper eyelid surgery can treat the following:

  • Sagging or drooping skin
  • Wrinkled eyelid skin
  • Muscle and tissue laxity

During the upper blepharoplasty procedure, your plastic surgeon will make an incision within the natural eye crease. Depending on the goal of the procedure, they will remove or reposition fat deposits, tighten lax muscles, and remove excess skin.

Upper blepharoplasty results in smoother skin around the eyes, creating a brightening effect that makes the patient appear more youthful and alert. For some patients, this also means that redundant skin is removed, allowing them to see more clearly.

Can Other Facial Procedures Improve My Vision?

Some patients with more severe hooded eyes may also benefit from an additional procedure: a brow lift. If the skin obstructing the eyes includes the eyebrows, or an overly heavy brow makes it difficult for the patient to see without lifting their brows or tilting their chin back, then this may be an ideal solution.

A brow lift centers on the upper third of the face: the eyebrows and forehead. During a traditional brow lift, the surgeon makes an incision across the top of the forehead to lift sagging skin and tissues, removing any excess that can crowd the brows. An endoscopic brow lift is another popular option, which uses a small camera to provide the surgeon with greater visibility, reducing the need for large incisions.

In either case, the results of a brow lift include:

  • Improved wrinkles and creases around the brows
  • Lifted and tightened skin throughout the upper face
  • Improved structure of the brows
  • Improved field of vision if the brows crowd the eyes

Is Blepharoplasty Covered By Insurance?

Although blepharoplasty can provide some functional improvements to vision, it is still considered a cosmetic procedure and is therefore not covered by insurance in most cases. It should be noted that while blepharoplasty can widen the patient’s field of vision, it is not a replacement for glasses, corrective lenses, or LASIK surgery.

In order for your upper eyelid surgery to be covered by insurance, your procedure must be deemed medically necessary, meaning your condition inhibits your ability to see or function normally, and it is not for cosmetic reasons. Frankly, this is a little difficult to achieve, although it is possible. You’ll need to provide proof (along with physician approval) that your eyelids are making it impossible to see properly. Your physician or optometrist will likely need to take pictures of your eyes to prove that the eyelid skin is hazardous to your daily life, inhibiting your ability to drive, read, or perform your job. You will also need to take a visual field test, which measures how far up, down, left, and right your eyes can see without moving your head—if your eyelid skin is obstructing your vision, you’ll likely struggle to see during the test.

Financing Your Blepharoplasty

If you’re a candidate for blepharoplasty, but your insurance won’t cover your procedure, you still have options. In fact, a majority of cosmetic surgery patients finance their procedures through third-party companies that specialize in cosmetic financing, like CareCredit®. Your plastic surgeon will discuss your options with you during your consultation.

The Importance of Regular Dermatology Check Ups

Close up of a mature female face

Regular dermatology check ups are essential for early detection of skin cancer and other conditions. This blog will discuss the various issues that can be identified during these appointments, the benefits of early detection, how to determine risk factors, who needs more frequent check ups, and tips to prepare for your dermatology visits.

4 Min Read:

What Happens During a Dermatology Appointment?

During a dermatology check up, your dermatologist will examine your skin from head to toe, ask about your medical history, and discuss treatment options if there are moles or irregularities that look suspicious. Your dermatologist may use a special tool called a dermatoscope to get a detailed view of moles and other marks on your skin.

Overall, a dermatology exam is quick, painless, and thorough. Feel free to point out any areas of your skin that worry you or have changed recently. The entire process usually takes about 15–20 minutes, making it a simple addition to your annual healthcare routine.

Common Issues Identified During Your Dermatology Exam

Regular dermatology check ups can reveal various skin conditions before they become serious problems. Your dermatologist keeps an eye out for signs of skin cancer, including unusual moles and suspicious growths. They can also spot other issues like eczema, psoriasis, and stubborn acne.

The only way to know for sure if a skin condition requires medical attention is through a professional examination. Even seemingly minor skin changes can sometimes signal underlying health issues.

Benefits of Early Skin Cancer Detection

Skin cancer affects millions of Americans each year. Research shows that one in five people in the U.S. will face skin cancer by their 70th birthday. The prevalence of skin cancer makes early detection essential. Thankfully, there are several effective skin cancer treatments, including Mohs surgery, that can be utilized when cancer is detected.

Benefits of early skin cancer detection include:

  • Treatment options are painless and effective.
  • Early treatment often leads to minimal scarring.
  • Recovery time is short and manageable. Patients don’t need to take too much time off from work or daily activities.
  • Your doctor builds a clear picture of your skin’s condition, appearance, and patterns. This familiarity makes future changes easier to spot.

How Often Should I Check for Skin Cancer?

Dermatologists recommend performing regular self-checks of your skin about once a month. When you are more familiar with the appearance of your skin, it is easier to detect any irregularities and get in touch with your dermatologist as soon as possible. When performing a self-check, remember the “ABCDE” rule, which describes signs of early melanoma to look for:

  • Asymmetry: One half of the mole does not match the other.
  • Border: The border of the mole is blurred, jagged, or irregular, and the pigment may spread into the surrounding skin.
  • Color: The color of the mole is uneven, including shades of black, brown, pink, or even red.
  • Diameter: The mole is growing in size; a diameter of about six millimeters or more is typically cause for concern.
  • Evolving: The mole changes in size, shape, or color over a period of time.

It’s best to schedule a yearly consultation with a qualified dermatologist like Dr. Vincent C. Hung to get a professional evaluation. While everyone should have regular skin checks, some people who are at a higher risk of developing skin cancer should visit more often.

If you spend lots of time outdoors, have a family history of skin cancer, have fair skin, or have had previous skin issues, talk to your dermatologist about scheduling more frequent visits.

Tips to Prepare for Your Dermatology Visit

Make the most of your appointment by coming prepared. Remove nail polish and wear your hair loose, as your doctor will check your fingernails, toenails, and scalp for visual indicators of skin cancer. Take photos of any spots or moles you’re worried about, especially if they’ve changed over time.

Write down any questions you have before your visit. Think about changes in your skincare routine, new products you’re using, and any skin concerns that have popped up since your last visit. This will help ensure you don’t forget anything important during your appointment.

How to Get Insurance to Pay for a Breast Lift

Young woman in a white bra

Breast lift surgeries continue to rise in popularity—the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports a 30% increase in breast lift procedures from 2019 to 2022 alone. This signals a growing trend among women seeking to restore their breasts’ natural position and shape. For many women considering this procedure, the primary concern is cost, which often prompts questions about insurance coverage. Since insurance providers maintain strict guidelines between cosmetic and medical procedures, getting coverage requires meeting specific criteria. This blog puts these considerations in perspective.

Why Get a Breast Lift?

A breast lift, also called mastopexy, helps women achieve firmer, more youthful-looking breasts. During this surgery, your plastic surgeon removes extra skin and lifts the breast tissue to create a natural, uplifted shape. Beyond the physical improvements, patients often find renewed confidence in their appearance and greater comfort in their daily activities.

Here are common reasons to consider a breast lift:

  • Restore breast shape after pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Improve breast appearance after significant weight loss
  • Correct naturally sagging breasts
  • Address uneven breast position
  • Reposition downward-pointing nipples

The best candidates for breast lifts are women at a stable weight, in good health, and have realistic expectations about the results. Ideally, candidates should be finished having kids, as future pregnancies can affect the surgery’s results. Before proceeding, schedule a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss your goals and medical history.

The Difference Between a Cosmetic and Reconstructive Breast Lift

Most breast lift procedures are performed for cosmetic reasons, like improving your appearance or boosting self-confidence. That said, some cases qualify as medically necessary. Understanding this distinction is important for insurance coverage purposes.

Cosmetic breast lifts focus on improving the appearance of sagging breasts caused by natural aging or changes after pregnancy. These elective procedures help women feel more confident but aren’t considered medically necessary. On the other hand, reconstructive breast lifts address specific medical conditions, such as rebuilding breasts after cancer surgery, correcting severe asymmetry, or repairing injury-related damage.

Insurance companies generally limit coverage to medically necessary procedures. This means they will cover reconstructive breast lifts if properly documented medical conditions exist.

When Is a Breast Lift Medically Necessary?

As mentioned earlier, insurance companies may cover breast lifts when medical conditions justify the procedure. While cosmetic concerns often motivate patients to consider breast lifts, several physical symptoms can make this surgery medically necessary.

A breast lift might be considered medically necessary when patients experience:

Physical Discomfort:

  • Chronic back pain
  • Persistent neck strain
  • Shoulder discomfort

Skin-Related Issues:

  • Recurring rashes under the breasts
  • Frequent skin infections
  • Irritation that doesn’t respond to treatment

Daily Life Impact:

  • Limited physical activity
  • Sleep disruption
  • Restricted movement during regular activities

Coverage for a Medically Necessary Breast Lift

Getting insurance coverage for a breast lift requires substantial medical evidence to support your claim. While most insurance providers classify breast lifts as cosmetic procedures, they may approve coverage if you can demonstrate genuine health issues that require surgical intervention.

Building a strong case begins with thorough medical documentation. Your healthcare providers should record all symptoms, treatments, and their outcomes, usually over 6-12 months. Be sure to include reports from various medical professionals, such as your primary care physician, specialists, and physical therapists.

How to Increase the Chances of Coverage:

  • Keep detailed records of your symptoms and their impact on your daily life
  • Collect evaluations from multiple doctors
  • Document all previous treatments that didn’t work
  • Ask your doctors for letters stating why you need the surgery
  • Work with your surgeon to submit the proper insurance codes

Remember that each insurance provider has different requirements, so contact your insurance company early in the process to understand their specific coverage criteria and documentation needs.

Will I Still Need a Reconstructive Procedure After Mohs Surgery?

Female side view profile on brown background

Mohs surgery techniques for skin cancer removal help preserve healthy surrounding tissue, often minimizing wound size. However, some reconstructive surgery is typically still required. This blog will explain the options for reconstruction after this cancer surgery and the benefits of choosing a qualified Mohs surgeon who also specializes in reconstructive procedures to perform them both.

4 Min Read:

What Is Mohs Surgery?

Mohs surgery is a precise way to remove skin cancer while saving as much healthy skin as possible. Your surgeon carefully removes one thin layer of skin at a time. Each layer is checked right away under a microscope to make sure all cancer cells are found and removed.

This step-by-step process helps your surgeon remove only the cancerous tissue, leaving healthy skin untouched. It’s one of the most successful treatments for skin cancer available today.

The approach works particularly well for treating common skin cancers like basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, especially in visible areas such as the face, neck, or hands. Because surgeons carefully examine and determine where the cancer stops and healthy tissue begins, they remove only what’s necessary. While this method saves as much healthy skin as possible, patients may still need reconstructive procedures afterward to help the area heal properly and look natural.

Why Is Reconstruction Often Needed After Mohs Surgery?

Mohs surgery removes skin cancer while keeping as much healthy tissue as possible. However, this process still creates a wound where the cancer is taken out. Some smaller wounds can heal by themselves with little scarring.

However, many wounds need extra care, especially those on visible parts of the body, like the face or neck. The same goes for areas that move a lot, such as joints or around the mouth. In these cases, reconstructive surgery helps restore both the look and function of the treated area.

Reconstruction may be needed for:

  • Facial areas, such as the nose, eyes, or lips, where proper function and aesthetics are critical.
  • Ears, where cartilage and soft tissue must often be repaired.
  • Scalp, to cover exposed tissue or bone.
  • Extremities, like hands and feet, to restore both appearance and mobility.

In many cases, an experienced, qualified plastic surgeon will help you decide if reconstruction would give you better results than letting the wound heal on its own.

Reconstructive Surgery Options for Mohs Patients

The type of reconstructive procedure depends on the size, depth, and location of the wound. Below are some common options:

Primary Closure

If the wound is small, it may be closed directly with stitches. This option works well in areas where the skin can be easily pulled together without creating tension.

Skin Grafts

For larger wounds, a skin graft may be used. This involves taking skin from another part of the body and attaching it to the surgical site. Skin grafts are often used for areas like the scalp or extremities.

Local Flaps

A local flap uses skin and tissue from an area adjacent to the wound to cover the defect. This method is particularly effective for facial reconstruction, as it helps maintain a natural appearance.

Cartilage or Bone Grafts

In cases where skin cancer removal affects deeper structures, such as the nose or ear, cartilage or bone grafts may be required to rebuild the area.

Managing Swelling After Blepharoplasty

Woman smiling as someone with gloved hands marks her face with a pen

Blepharoplasty is a highly effective procedure that rejuvenates the eyes. After surgery, swelling is a natural part of the healing process. This blog discusses how to manage blepharoplasty swelling to ensure a smoother recovery and optimal results.

4 Min Read:

Blepharoplasty Swelling Timeline

Swelling after blepharoplasty is completely normal and follows a mostly predictable timeline:

  • Days One to Three: Swelling peaks during the first 72 hours after surgery. The eyelids may feel tight, and the area around the eyes might appear puffy and discolored.
  • Days Four to Seven: Swelling begins to subside, and bruising typically becomes less intense. You may notice some itchiness or mild discomfort as the healing progresses.
  • Week Two: Most patients experience a significant reduction in swelling and bruising. At this stage, the eyelids start to look more natural.
  • Weeks Three to Four: Residual swelling diminishes further, and you may feel comfortable returning to social and professional activities.
  • Months Two to Three: Some swelling can remain but is usually minimal and primarily noticeable only to you. Final results begin to develop.

Tips for Effective Healing

To recover efficiently, follow these healing tips:

  • Follow Your Surgeon’s Instructions: Your surgeon’s post-operative care guidelines are tailored to your specific needs. Adhering to them ensures proper healing.
  • Use Cold Compresses: Applying cold compresses during the first 48 hours will go a long way in helping you reduce swelling and pain. However, you should avoid placing the ice directly on the skin; use a soft cloth or gel pack instead.
  • Keep Your Head Elevated: Sleep with your head elevated on two or three pillows. This helps minimize fluid accumulation and promotes blood circulation.
  • Avoid Straining: Activities like bending over, lifting heavy objects, or intense exercise can increase pressure around the eyes. Take it easy for the first two weeks.
  • Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration aids your body’s natural healing processes. Aim for at least eight glasses of water every day.
  • Limit Salt Intake: Sodium can cause fluid retention, which may worsen swelling. Stick to a low-sodium diet during recovery.
  • Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: These can impair healing and increase swelling. Refrain from both before and after surgery as recommended by your surgeon.

How to Minimize Swelling and Bruising

Proactive measures can further reduce swelling and bruising after blepharoplasty:

  • Apply Prescribed Medications or Ointments: Use any prescribed creams or medications to reduce swelling and prevent infection.
  • Wear Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from sun exposure, which can aggravate swelling. Sunglasses also shield your eyes from wind and dust.
  • Avoid Heat: Steer clear of hot showers, saunas, and direct sunlight during the initial recovery phase.
  • Gentle Cleansing: Clean your face carefully with the approved cleanser provided by your surgeon. Avoid rubbing the eyelids or applying pressure.
  • Stick to Light Activities: Gradually ease back into daily tasks. Light walking is encouraged to boost circulation, but vigorous activities should be avoided.
  • Be Patient: Healing takes time. Avoid rushing the process or comparing your progress to others.

Expected Recovery Results

Blepharoplasty results improve progressively over time. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Early Stages: Initial results may be hidden by swelling and bruising. It’s important to be patient and focus on maintaining a positive mindset during this phase.
  • Two to Four Weeks After Surgery: Your eyelids begin to look more refined, and the swelling will have mostly subsided. Any remaining discoloration can often be concealed with makeup.
  • Three Months and Beyond: At this point, your eyelids will appear natural and rejuvenated. Scars will continue to fade over the next year.

Consistent communication with your surgeon during follow-up appointments is essential to monitor your progress. If you notice unusual swelling, severe pain, or other concerning symptoms, don’t hesitate to reach out to your surgeon.

Making Your Liposuction Results Last

a cropped image of a woman's toned body

Achieving the best long-term results after liposuction requires ongoing effort. This blog will provide practical advice on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including diet and exercise tips, to help patients preserve their liposuction results and enjoy their new body contours.

4 Min Read:

What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure designed to remove stubborn fat deposits that don’t respond to diet and exercise. It targets areas like the abdomen, thighs, hips, arms, back, and even under the chin. The procedure involves a surgeon making small incisions and using a thin tube called a cannula to suction out excess fat. While liposuction improves body shape, it is not a weight-loss solution or a treatment for obesity. It’s best suited for individuals near their ideal weight who want to refine specific problem areas and achieve a more proportionate appearance.

What Happens After Liposuction?

Liposuction removes excess fat deposits to sculpt your body and enhance your natural contours. However, it’s important to know that the procedure does not prevent future weight gain. Fat cells removed during liposuction will not return, but your remaining fat cells can still grow if you gain weight.

That’s why maintaining your results requires a commitment to a healthy lifestyle. By adopting certain habits, you can enjoy your slimmer, more defined appearance for years to come.

How to Maintain Your Liposuction Results?

Stick to a Balanced Diet

Your diet plays a major role in maintaining your results. Focus on nutrient-rich, whole foods that fuel your body.

  • Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits. These provide vitamins, minerals, and fiber while being low in calories.
  • Choose lean proteins. Options like chicken, fish, tofu, and beans help repair and maintain muscle.
  • Limit processed foods. Sugary snacks, fried foods, and sodas can lead to weight gain.
  • Stay hydrated. Drinking water can curb unnecessary snacking and improve your metabolism.

Prioritize Regular Exercise

Exercise is essential to prevent weight gain and tone your body. A mix of cardio and strength training is ideal.

  • Cardio activities like walking, running, or cycling burn calories and improve heart health.
  • Strength training builds muscle, which boosts metabolism and helps maintain your sculpted appearance.

Don’t worry if you’re new to working out. Start small and build up your routine gradually.

Maintain a Stable Weight

Fluctuations in weight can affect your liposuction results. Significant weight gain can lead to fat being stored in untreated areas, which might change your body’s overall proportions.

To avoid this, focus on consistency. Monitor your weight regularly and adjust your diet and exercise routine if needed.

Practice Healthy Habits Daily

Your day-to-day choices can have a lasting impact on your body. Prioritize habits that support your well-being.

  • Get enough sleep. Aim for 7-9 hours per night to help regulate your metabolism.
  • Manage stress. High stress can lead to emotional eating and weight gain. Techniques like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing can help.
  • Avoid smoking and limit alcohol. Both can negatively impact your overall health and appearance.

How Soon Can You Start Exercising After Liposuction?

It’s normal to wonder when you can resume exercise after liposuction. Always follow your surgeon’s post-op instructions to avoid complications.

Most patients can start light walking within a few days to promote circulation and reduce swelling. However, more strenuous activities like running or lifting weights may need to wait for several weeks. Your surgeon will provide a personalized timeline based on your recovery progress.

The Role of Follow-Up Appointments

Regular follow-up visits with your surgeon are key to ensuring the best results. These appointments allow your doctor to monitor your healing and address any concerns.

Don’t hesitate to ask questions during these visits. Your surgeon is there to help you maintain your ideal results.

Can a Skin Care Routine Prevent Skin Cancer?

Protecting skin from harmful UV rays using sunscreen, skin care products, or serums containing antioxidants can help decrease skin cancer risks. Skin resurfacing treatments, such as dermabrasion and chemical peels, can also lower the risk of skin cancer by removing the upper layers of skin and any precancerous cells found there. This blog will explain how these proactive steps can help reduce skin cancer risk, as well as the importance of regular self-examinations and periodic visits to the dermatologist to help detect skin cancer in its early stages.

What Causes Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is caused by DNA damage in skin cells. This damage often results from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds. Other factors, such as a weakened immune system or a family history of skin cancer, can also increase your risk.

Tips to Prevent Skin Cancer

No skin care routine can fully prevent skin cancer. However, certain steps can help protect your skin and reduce the chances of skin cancer developing.

Get Into the Habit of Wearing Sunscreen

Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher daily can block harmful UV rays. These rays are responsible for the majority of skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. The key tips for effective sunscreen use include:

  • Thorough & Generous Application: Cover all exposed areas, including the face, neck, ears, and hands.
  • Reapply Often: Sunscreen needs to be reapplied every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
  • Choose the Right Formula: Look for water-resistant options that protect against both UVA and UVB rays.

Fight Free Radicals with Antioxidants

Free radicals are unstable molecules that can damage your skin cells over time, increasing the risk of cancer. Incorporating skin care products with antioxidants into your routine is a proactive way to protect your skin, as antioxidants can help neutralize unstable molecules. Examples of skin care product ingredients to add to your routine include:

  • Vitamin C: Brightens skin and helps repair damage caused by UV exposure.
  • Vitamin E: Moisturizes and strengthens the skin barrier.
  • Green Tea Extract: A powerful antioxidant that soothes the skin and reduces inflammation.

Seek Skin Resurfacing Treatments

Treatments like chemical peels and dermabrasion remove the outermost layer of skin, including any damaged or precancerous cells. By sloughing off these layers, you may lower the chance of those cells developing into skin cancer. Examples of skin resurfacing treatments include:

  • Chemical Peels: Use a chemical solution to exfoliate the skin and improve texture.
  • Dermabrasion: A special rotating instrument that sands away damaged skin.

Always consult with a dermatologist to determine if these treatments are appropriate for you.

Build a Comprehensive Skin Cancer-Reducing Routine

Here’s an example of a simple yet effective routine:

Morning: Start with a gentle cleanser, followed by an antioxidant serum and sunscreen.

Evening: Cleanse again and apply a moisturizer. You can add retinoids if recommended, as they can help repair skin damage.

Weekly: Exfoliate to remove dead skin cells and improve the effectiveness of other products.

Remember that consistency is key. Therefore, you need to make these steps a habit to better protect your skin.

Self-Examinations

No routine is complete without regular skin checks. Examine your skin monthly for any changes in moles, freckles, or spots. Early detection can save lives. If you notice anything unusual, consult your dermatologist.

Regular Dermatologist Visits

A yearly visit to your dermatologist is an essential part of skin cancer prevention. Dermatologists can:

  • Perform professional skin exams
  • Identify and perform biopsies on suspicious lesions
  • Provide personalized advice for your skin type and lifestyle

Regular check-ups will ensure that any potential issues are addressed before they become serious.

How Long Do Silicone Implants Last?

If you are considering or have undergone breast augmentation, you may wonder how long silicone implants last. While breast implants are designed to be durable, they are not lifetime devices. Over time, they may need replacement or removal. This blog highlights what you need to know about the lifespan of silicone implants, signs it is time for a replacement, and what to expect during the process.

4 Min Read:

Average Lifespan of Breast Implants

Silicone breast implants typically last between 10 to 20 years. However, this doesn’t mean they will need to be replaced exactly at the 10-year mark. Many patients keep their implants for longer without any issues.

Advancements in implant technology have improved durability, but they are still susceptible to wear and tear over time. Factors like your body’s natural changes, implant placement, and external trauma can all affect how long your implants last.

It is important to schedule regular checkups with your surgeon to monitor your implants. While they may feel fine, routine imaging like an MRI or ultrasound can detect silent ruptures or other concerns.

When to Replace Breast Implants

You might not need to replace your breast implants unless there’s an issue. However, there are some common reasons for implant replacement, such as:

  • Rupture or Leakage: Silicone implants are filled with a gel that may stay intact even if the outer shell breaks. This is known as a “silent rupture.” Saline implants, on the other hand, deflate noticeably.
  • Capsular Contracture: This occurs when scar tissue hardens around the implant, causing discomfort or distortion.
  • Aesthetic Changes: Over time, natural aging, weight fluctuations, or pregnancy can change the appearance of your breasts, leading some people to seek a revision.
  • Personal Preference: Some patients decide to upgrade to newer implants or change their size or shape.

Some common signs it is time for a replacement include:

  • Persistent pain or discomfort
  • Noticeable changes in breast shape or size
  • Hardening of the breast tissue
  • Visible rippling or wrinkling

If you notice any of these symptoms, you should immediately schedule a consultation with your surgeon.

Silicone vs. Saline Implants

While silicone implants are known for their natural look and feel, saline implants have their own benefits. Here’s a quick comparison:

Silicone Implants

  • Lifespan: 10–20 years
  • Feel: Softer and more natural
  • Appearance: Less likely to ripple
  • Detection of Ruptures: Requires imaging (silent rupture)

Saline Implants

  • Lifespan: 10–20 years
  • Feel: Slightly firmer
  • Appearance: Rounder shape and higher risk of rippling in thin patients
  • Detection of Ruptures: Instantly noticeable as the implant deflates

Choosing between silicone and saline depends on personal preference and your surgeon’s recommendation. Silicone implants are generally preferred for their realistic feel, but saline implants remain a good option for certain patients.

Breast Implant Replacement Procedure and Recovery

If it’s time to replace your implants, the procedure is similar to your original augmentation surgery. Here’s what you can expect:

The Procedure

  • Consultation: Your surgeon will discuss your goals, examine your implants, and suggest the best options for replacement.
  • Surgery: General anesthesia is used to make you comfortable during the procedure. The old implants are removed, and new ones are placed. Depending on your needs, this may involve adjusting the implant pocket or addressing scar tissue.
  • Duration: The surgery typically takes one to three hours.

Recovery

  • Immediate Recovery: You’ll need a few days of rest. Swelling and discomfort are normal in the first week.
  • Activity Restrictions: Avoid strenuous activities for four to six weeks.
  • Final Results: It can take a few months for swelling to subside and your breasts to settle into their final position.

Your recovery may vary depending on whether additional procedures, like a breast lift, are performed at the same time. Here are important tips for a smooth recovery.

  • Follow all post-operative instructions
  • Wear a supportive surgical bra
  • Avoid lifting heavy objects
  • Attend all follow-up appointments
